General Vettori, Emperor Moles

Ever since seeing this picture

Vettori Moles

I have been haunted by its similarity to this famous photo

McArthur Hirohito

On the surface, the only parallel between the first photo – Vettori and Moles watching a rained out ODI at Christchurch – and the second – General McArthur and Emperor Hirohito facing up to the press after Japan’s capitulation at the end of the Second World War – is the angles of Vettori’s and McArthur’s respective elbows.

Perish the thought, but could the developments of the past few days deepen the parallels?

The God of Sehwagology owes Mr Wright a neck wringing.

If Mr Wright does not comply to being NZ coach, just say the word…

I still can’t quite work out who’s behind all this. Given that there’s really only three “regular senior” players – Dan, Baz and Ross – and it’s the latter two who haven’t exactly prospered under the Moles regime, I’m inclined to think it’s them. Then again, if it’s true Vettori’s been coaching the team for six months while Moles stands there clueless to provide tactical guidance or at least co ordinate technical support, maybe he’s had enough. As co-selector and captain, perhaps Vettori felt he was powerful enough to force Moles out?

However, Moles was ND coach, right? Vettori and Moles didn’t seem to be on bad terms – perhaps it’s a mixture of the two scenarios – other senior players don’t like the coach, and Dan decides that unity within the core group of players is more important than siding with the coach and potentially creating a schism within the team. Baz and Ross don’t look to be dropped anytime soon, so their opinions hold much weight.

‘Tis an interesting political situation to ponder.
